Tips for a Healthy Chetek Home

A clean home can boost your mood and encourage your immune system! And with the official start of spring upon us, it’s an opportune time to put your Chetek home in order. Here’s tips to help you!

Let in sunlight. Natural light is a mood-booster and nature’s disinfectant! A University of Oregon study found that sunlight-washed rooms held fewer germs than those kept in the dark. Sunlight discourages bacterial growth and mold, too!

Add houseplants. Plants produce oxygen and help catch airborne particles. Plants have been shown to improve mood and contribute to well-being. (Homes with children or pets need non-toxic plants – do a little homework before choosing new plants!)

When you clean your home, focus on frequently-touched surfaces. Things like doorknobs, countertops, refrigerator handles, cupboards, remote controls, keyboards, sink faucets and toilet handles. If possible, use disinfectant cleanser while wearing gloves.

When using disinfectant cleansers, do not wipe the area immediately. Allow at least 10 seconds for the disinfectant to work properly.

Wipe a disinfected surface clean by wiping consistently in one direction. Do not rub back and forth. This helps prevent re-contamination!

Small areas of mold can be treated with a 3% solution of hydrogen peroxide. This is safer than using bleach. Hydrogen peroxide is also more effective for cleaning mold from porous surfaces. Letting light reach the treated area can discourage new mold.
