Credit Report News for Chetek Home Buyers and Homeowners

Your credit history affects your financial life in many ways. Whether you want to buy a new home, find a new job, or get car insurance, your credit history matters.

Fortunately, the 3 major bureaus, Experian, TransUnion and Equifax, have made it easier to monitor your credit. From now through April 2021, you can obtain a free copy of your credit report every week! Here’s a few reasons to take advantage of it.

1. Credit report errors affect 1 out of every 5 Americans, according to the Federal Trade Commission. Even minor errors can create problems. Serious errors can cause financial damage. It pays to catch errors early!

2. Identity theft has affected about one-third of U.S. households. Your credit history will show any accounts opened in your name!

3. Economic stimulus payments have attracted a wave of phishing scams. You may not realize you’ve been victimized until you see your credit report.

4. If you have a student loan or mortgage in forbearance, or deferred payment arrangements with other creditors, it shouldn’t hurt your credit. However, if your lender doesn’t report the forbearance or deferment properly, you could find “late pays” on your credit.

To obtain your free credit report, visit: AnnualCreditReport.com. This is the official site authorized by Federal law for consumer use. Beware of imitation websites!

If you find any errors on your report, you may file a dispute directly with the reporting bureau. There is no charge to do this. Be sure to see our prior blog posts for tips on improving your credit score!
