Preparing Your Northwestern Wisconsin Home for Winter

Northwestern Wisconsin Home Winter Preparation

In Northwestern Wisconsin, the cool autumn nights remind us that winter is just around the corner! Fortunately, you can breeze through your home preparations with this checklist. Here are recommendations for a safe and comfortable Wisconsin winter!

Indoor:

  • Change batteries in smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. Replace detectors that are 10 years old, because the sensors degrade over time.
  • Have your furnace inspected for safe and efficient operation. Stock up on filters. Thin filters (1 to 2 inches) will need replacement more often than thicker filters. Pet owners may need to change filters more often.
  • Inspect heating ducts or ask your HVAC professional to check them. Schedule cleaning as needed.
  • If you have a wood-burning stove or fireplace, chimneys and dampers should be inspected. In general, chimneys should be cleaned each year to remove creosote buildup. You can find more tips from the City of Eau Claire website.
  • Clean out your dryer duct and exterior vent. If your dryer duct is plastic or vinyl, consider upgrading to a metal duct for improved heat resistance and safety.
  • Seal any drafts around doors and windows.

Outdoor:

  • Clean out gutters and downspouts. Debris in gutters can cause water to back up and freeze, which can create ice dams and potential issues.
  • Detach the water hose. Shut off the water valve to the hose bib. Once the valve is off, open the outside faucet and drain any remaining water.
  • Run the gas out of your lawn mower before storing it for the season.
  • Remove window unit air conditioners or cover your central air unit.
  • Check your roof and siding for any signs of damage.
  • If you have a generator, give it a test run. Test run your snowblower, too!
