Hunting in Northwestern Wisconsin is a time-honored tradition! Northwestern Wisconsin has several public access hunting areas, but nothing beats having your own property. Here are tips to find the deer camp of your dreams!
There is no minimum acreage requirement for hunting on your own private land in Wisconsin. But local zoning regulations, easements, and ordinances should be verified to make sure the parcel allows your hunting plans. Hunting laws and license requirements still apply to private land; visit the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources website for more information.
From a practical standpoint, you should have at least 5 acres for small game hunting. Deer hunters have better luck with parcels of 10 acres or more. However, the quality of the wildlife habitat on the land, and your ease of access to the land, are prime considerations.
When evaluating hunting land, look for diverse habitat that offers a mix of hardwoods, conifers, wetlands and open areas. Land that offers natural forage, such as acorns and berries, will be attractive to deer. Dense brush and thickets make good bedding spots for wildlife.
Look for signs of an active deer population. Deer trails, scrapes, and tree bark damage from antler rubs are encouraging signs. The higher and deeper the tree bark damage, the larger the bucks! You can also ask the seller for trail camera footage, if available.
If you intend to build a cabin or year-around home on the property, check for a building site, and verify its suitability for construction. Some land parcels are ineligible for development due to zoning restrictions, problematic soils, lack of utility access, or the presence of wetlands or flood plains.
