Fall in Northwestern Wisconsin brings pleasantly cool days, vibrant colors and time-honored traditions. For homeowners, fall is also the ideal time to prepare for the winter months ahead! This guide will help you get ready for the change of seasons.
1. Inspect the roof. Architectural shingles can last 12 to 30 years, whereas 3-tab shingles last 12 to 17 years. But extreme weather can shorten the lifespan of any roof. Look for loose, damaged or missing shingles, and when in doubt, call a professional.
2. Clean and inspect gutters and downspouts. If you don’t already have downspout extensions, consider adding them to keep water away from the foundation.
3. Check the chimney, including the flashing at the roofline, the chimney cap, and the chimney interior. Chimneys should be cleaned at least once a year; more often if you burn wood as a heat source. The damper must also be checked, to ensure it opens and closes properly during fireplace use.
4. Exterior water faucets and any exposed pipes should be wrapped with insulation.
5. Caulk any holes or gaps around the home exterior. (Mice can enter a dime-sized opening!) Add weatherstripping around doors and windows to prevent drafts. Plastic window insulation sheets can reduce drafts in garages, outbuildings and porch areas.
6. Check the insulation in your attic and crawlspace. Northwestern Wisconsin’s climate calls for 16 to 22 inches of attic insulation. (R-value of R-49 to R-60, depending on the material.)
7. Schedule a furnace tune-up, and stock up on furnace filters. On average, furnace filters should be changed about once a month when the system is running daily.
8. Change batteries in smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. Check the charge level of household fire extinguishers. If the pressure indicator isn’t showing “green,” the extinguisher should be recharged or replaced.
