Finding the right contractor for your Northwestern Wisconsin home can be daunting. Here’s how to find reliable professionals for your next home repair, construction or improvement project!
1. Outline your project in writing. Include the materials, colors and finishes you want. If you need help putting it together, ask an interior designer or an architect for input.
2. Search for professional contractors who are members of the Wisconsin Builders Association. There are 21 local associations within the WBA. Barron and Rusk counties are served by the Heart of the North Builders Association, and you can find the member list at hnbawi.org.

3. Interview at least three contractors. Get written estimates from each one. (The most accurate estimate tends to be near the middle.) Also ask for proof of business registration, proof of insurance, and references from past clients.
4. Before you choose a contractor, verify their license status. In Wisconsin, most situations require the contractor to hold a Dwelling Contractor certification. You can verify a contractor’s license or registration by searching online at DSPS.wi.gov.
5. Once you’ve chosen a contractor, obtain a written contract for the project. Read it carefully before signing. Be certain to review the project description, material list, financial requirements, job timeline and other terms.
